EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping is a stress management tool that uses the same acupressure points as acupuncture, without the needles! It uses those points to engage with the stress centre of the brain, whilst drawing on both cognitive and exposure therapies to allow any uncomfortable emotions, thoughts or sensations to release.
When we de-programme those emotional triggers by tapping on meridian points, we create ‘space’ in the nervous system to help you cope with things more easily and find your flow.
EFT is very different to traditional talk therapy. It comes under the category of Somatic (body) therapy. As a self help tool, EFT will provide tangible techniques to use outside of your sessions that will support your nervous system and enhance the work you’ve done in session.
EFT is evidence based and clinically researched and has been shown to assist with a wide range of challenges including anxiety, depression, PTSD, phobias, cravings, and more. The science behind Tapping is incredible, so feel free to ask any questions as I’m definitely in the ‘Science Nerd’ category!
How Does It Work?
1
Acupressure Points
We gently tap on these points on the head and upper body.
2
Emotions, Thoughts, Sensation
While we tap, we acknowledge the emotion, thoughts and any present physical sensations.
3
Acceptance Statement
Together we will create a statement that feels accurate as we affirm and accept how this is for you in this present moment.
4
Re-wiring of triggers
As we tap, all of these components come together to calm the stress centre of the brain and re-regulate your nervous system. This allows the body to relearn how to respond to the trigger which reduces the intensity of the experience.
5
Take a breath
Taking a breath and letting it go at the end of the tapping round helps shift energy and enhances the feeling of calm groundedness.
International Research
These are some links to excellent research that has been conducted about EFT. The overview of this research is that systematic reviews and meta-analyses have demonstrated its efficacy for both physiological and psychological symptoms. Current research bibliography lists more than 100 studies published in peer-reviewed journals.
